Purple Wartyback -Cyclonaias tuberculata

  • Posterior two-thirds of shell covered in prominent nodules
     

  • Interdentum wide and flat
     

  • Nacre purple to deep purple

Description:
Shell thick, quadrate to circular, compressed; anterior and ventral margins rounded, posterior end squared off by a wing behind the beak; shell surface yellowish or reddish-brown to dark brown, posterior two-thirds of shell covered with prominent nodules that become ridges on the dorsal wing. Breaks low; beak sculpture numerous  fine zigzag ridges. Nacre purple to deep purple. Pseudocardinal teeth massive and serrated; lateral teeth thick and short; area between pseudocardinals and laterals (interdentum) wide to flat.
 


 

Habitat:

Small to large rivers in gravel or mixed sand and gravel in areas with moderate to swift current.
